By default, user position is pulled from a huge database of worldwide cities and towns, but since there are often multiple towns of the same name in the country, it can happen that the position of the User Map marker is not placed on the correct one. In such case, it also points to the city center registered in the database, and not to the actual district or street where the APNEA.cz member lives. In case there are multiple members in the same city, they will be all listed on the same marker (unless they move their marker manually to another, slightly different, position).
When user did not enter any city name in his Profile settings, or when the name he/she entered was not found in our database, the system tries to guess user's position from the accessing IP address, using technology called GeoIP. In this case, the position will also just point to the city center, but additionally, instead of the real residential town, it may be rather the one the user was in when accessing the APNEA.cz website for the first time, or it can be a location where the Internet provider has a node or their headquarters. In most cases (around 98%), the location is relatively correct (within few miles), but it can also happen that it points to a very distant place.
There are five types of markers:
The default positions (whether looked up by the city name or by the IP address) are shown with a small marker in the style of a diver flag (red with a diagonal white stripe). When you click on the marker, there will be "auto pos." written near the user name (unless it is a marker shared by multiple users, in which case there is just a list of users without closer details).
Users have the possibility to move their markers to the exact place where they live. If they did it, their position will be shown with a small full red marker, and there will be "user edited pos." written near their name on the user info window visible after clicking the marker.
Members can also allow so called "GeoIP tracking" in their Profile settings. In that case not only the registered city will be shown on the map, but also all locations from where they accessed the APNEA.cz website (i.e. during vacation, diving trip, competition, or a business travel). As long as you are logged into your APNEA.cz account, you will be also able to see your own GeoIP positions, even if you did not allow it in the Profile settings. For privacy reasons, others won't be able to see your connection data, and the option is turned off by default, so you can see positions only of a relatively small part of members who explicitly allowed it. If you enter an exclamation mark into the search box, the map will show only members with hand edited locations.
When you are logged into your account, your own principal marker will be shown bigger than others, with an "I" on it. This marker is draggable - you can move it with the help of the mouse, and place exactly to your real location (you can zoom to the highest level to see your street or building). See more details about moving the marker in the FAQ above.
Country markers, using icons of national flags, are located on the geographical center of the country where there is at least one diver in that country. After clicking on it, you can see a scrollable list of all registered freedivers in that land (with the exception of those who opted not to be visible on the map by entering a dash instead of the city name in their Profile settings, or those whose position could have not been detected by any means).
On the info windows listing mutiple users, you can click any user name - the map will reload with a closer zoom on the specific user. GeoIP locations of user's connections may be shown (if he/she allowed it in Profile settings) and more details will be available on the info window over the marker.
